On this day in 1943, the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising ends.

It was the act of Jewish resistance in the Warsaw Ghetto in German-occupied Poland during WWII to oppose Nazi Germany's final effort to transport the remaining ghetto population to Majdanek and Treblinka concentration camps.

The uprising started on 19 April when the ghetto refused to surrender to the police commander SS-Brigadeführer Jürgen Stroop, who then ordered the burning of the ghetto.

A total of 13,000 Jews died, about half of them burnt alive or suffocated.
The man in the back is Josef Blösche, who was sentenced to death and executed in July 1969.
He participated in the shooting of about 1,000 Jews in 1943. The Jews gave him the nickname "Frankenstein" for raping and then killing women in the ghetto.
