Starting in March, as the coronavirus outbreak in New York began, parts of the city emptied out — especially the wealthiest areas.

Here’s what we know about where everyone went. nyti.ms/2LBYrGO
In March, the U.S. Post Office received 56,000 mail-forwarding requests from New York City, more than double the monthly average.

In April, 81,000 — twice the number from a year earlier. 60% of the new requests were for destinations outside the city. nyti.ms/2LBYrGO
Those mail-forwarding requests show some New Yorkers abandoned the Upper West Side for Miami. Others left Gramercy Park for New Jersey. And some left Brooklyn apartments for California. nyti.ms/2LBYrGO
After Manhattan, Brooklyn had the second-most mail-forwarding requests, concentrated in neighborhoods like Dumbo and Brooklyn Heights. Black and Hispanic neighborhoods, including areas where essential workers live, tended to have fewer requests. nyti.ms/2LBYrGO
Many New Yorkers who fled their homes in the city moved to nearby areas in Long Island, New Jersey and upstate New York.
