This is good news, but would really have loved to see an urgent humanitarian boost in there too - the UN is asking for $6.7 billion for crisis areas and NZ is yet to contribute to that. Cox's Bazaar refugee camp just had its first #Covid cases confirmed. 1/3
What's more - getting the NZ govt publicly behind a global debt cancellation call would be a great sign of solidarity for the global south. (great to see @golrizghahraman getting behind this). #CancelTheDebt 2/3
Looking to next year's budget - we need a massive and rapid aid boost so that the world can resist and recover together. Strengthening healthcare systems, social support, and climate resilience will bolster our global immune system and push back on the pandemic's effects. 3/3

We've heard a lot from various corners of government on climate change this term about aiming for 1.5 degrees, being a good Pacific neighbour, nuclear free moment etc. So how is our Paris Agreement target for 2030 aligned with those aims? A thread /1
/2 The first critical thing is which pathway for 1.5 degrees do we choose? The one with no or low overshoot, or one with high overshoot that could set off devastating feedback loops, and that relies on speculative, expensive and rights-breaching carbon capture technology.
/3 we say the former is the only way to go. NZ's current Paris target for 2030 is for 11% emissions reduction below 1990 levels. If every other country did the same, we would be on track to blow 1.5 degrees out of the water. But on current policy we're not even on track for that
Historic moment, and a huge step-up for the country. Now continues the work to actually cut our pollution, and do that in a transformative and just way.
But this is a huge win for so many people that have driven this from a concept to piece of legislation. Some listed below 1/7
First and foremost @GenZeroNZ :
Back in the day, @realpaulyoung with the original concept for the law in 'The Big Ask' report, and Jamie for all the policy heavy lifting once it was a Bill @LisaMcLaren2013 for the immense effort coordinating the campaign the whole way 2/7
Great to see some political intent behind framing the climate crisis strongly from @AklCouncil. Look forward to seeing how that translates into decision-making. As to what that could look like - a thread: 1/6 ourauckland.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/articles/news/…
1 +ve of this is requirement for climate impact statements on all council reports. Like Maori impact statements, will force decision-makers to turn minds to this. Disappointing that requiring this of CCOs was not taken up; @AklTransport decisions have huge climate impacts 2/6
Emergency framing brings urgency, can help mobilise resources + gives political space for prioritising climate when certain voices like NIMBYs or car lobby try 2 hold back action. Hope to see this reflected in the next LTP, Statement of Intent to CCOs + unitary plan refresh. 3/6
