I don't think there's a 'right' way, but some of the folks who do really long threads like @SethAbramson (sometimes over 100 tweets in one thread!) simply write up their whole thread (probably in a plain text app like... /1
@venterandy @jonfavs @threadreaderapp @SethAbramson ...Notepad, but not Word otherwise auto-formatting happens) and then, when done, simply paste the whole thread into twitter which then shows how much text can be included in the first tweet. I would then cut the remaining text, add ".../1" at the end of the first tweet and... /2

Then, most important, as soon as "View Message?" appears you need to click and view the tweet you've just posted (to make sure all ok, delete if not) and then you just comment on your own first tweet by repeating the process above - paste the remaining text, cut out.../3
@venterandy @jonfavs @threadreaderapp @SethAbramson ...what doesn't fit, post the tweet, View it, reply to it etc. Adding ".../end" at the end is good but not essential. This way it all threads nicely and if you've written it all up front in text editor it reduces typos because you'll re-read as you go along and, importantly... 4
@venterandy @jonfavs @threadreaderapp @SethAbramson ...every tweet gets posted quickly after previous one (important if you want to post whole thing before anyone starts to reply). If you go Pro, there are apps like Buffer and Hootsuite which do all this and schedule timing of postings, but I tend not to bother. So if you do.../5
