Foundations of Makurdi

Although an emerging important port for British colonial trade, Makurdi became more prominent and important when it became the headquarters of the then Benue Province in 1927. #BenueTwitter #BenueArchives
The rail line reached Makurdi in 1925 but it was until 1932 that the Railway Bridge was opened and Alhaji Baba Hwembe Osuman became the first man to drive a train across it. #BenueArchives
The town originally had ten wards,  as follows  Lafia Road,  North Market,  South Mission, Wailamayo,  Wadata, Ankpa Road, Clerk Quarters,  Central Market,  South Market and GRA.

It was the decision of the Colonial Administration that Tiv Native authority generated funds to run Makurdi Town. With 5000 taxable population, Ugbegili said, the taxes from Makurdi were  always higher than the rest of Benue provincial towns and villages.

Colonial Makurdi Town was different from today. Most activities in the town happened by the river side, around what is Wadata Market today and around the rail way station headquarters, where the railway market and quarters are. These were to change with time.#BenueArchives
