THREAD on Portman Actions v. Words

It’s so hard to keep track of @senrobportman anytime, let alone during a crisis. If you weren’t paying attention, you might think he was going to bat for everyday Ohioans amid the crisis.

This thread will correct any such misimpression.

1/
As the crisis hit, and Democratic Senators and House members began pushing for major support for front-line workers, hospitals, and local and state governments shouldering most of the burden of this crisis, Portman was right there….attacking those efforts.

2/
He went on television and attacked Democrats for “insisting” on more “money for states and localities [and] hospitals”.

Remember: he thought they wanted TOO much for hospitals and state/local governments.

3/

Thankfully, Dems like @SenSherrodBrown kept insisting, persisting, and resisting, and they got more money in that bill

Looking at the bleak numbers we’re seeing around Ohio and elsewhere, it still wasn’t enough

They were right. Portman was wrong. He owes them an apology

3/
Haven't seen the apology yet.

But what have we seen?

Portman’s next move was to tout MORE support for hospitals--you know, additional support that, weeks back, he had attacked Democrats for “insisting on".

4/

Not long after, Portman really saw the light, because he told Ohio media that he now wanted to fight for MORE support for Ohio local governments:

To quote the Senator: “If (municipalities) have no revenue to pay for some of these absolute needs like public safety, it becomes a real problem.”

Yeah. A big problem.

Just like Democrats had "insisted" on the prior month when you attacked them for doing so.

6/
Now fast forward to now.

Hearing the same concern from local governments Portman had discussed, House Democrats enact the Heroes Act.

It provides the surge of support local governments and front-line workers need in this crisis.

Finally.

The "new" Portman must be thrilled, right?

Nope. He takes to the Senate to oppose it.

NOW Portman says: ”We have to see how the current rescue package has worked first.”

How it's working? How it's working?!

Let me quote a certain junior Senator from Ohio, on April 21: “If (municipalities) have no revenue to pay for some of these absolute needs like public safety, it becomes a real problem.”

That's how it's working

Let's see some examples:

9/
Nationally, it's a "real problem"

10/

cnn.com/2020/04/23/pol…
In Southern Ohio, it's a "real problem"

11/

daytondailynews.com/news/local/day…
In Northern Ohio, it's a "real problem"

12/

cleveland.com/community/2020…
Bottom line: thousands of government workers have already lost their jobs, and local leaders are warning the next round of cuts will severely impact public safety and public health.

That's how it's working, Senator.

13/
Finally, to quote my good friend @RepTimRyan , as he asks how Republicans who championed the massive tax giveaway not long ago but now oppose this new bill....

Actually, I won't quote him. Just watch the whole speech...
