Excellent @UKandEU report by @hayward_katy @DPhinnemore and others on Northern Ireland after Brexit. Huge challenges ahead to implement the protocol.

The UK government's combination of claimed sympathy for the union, general disregard for Northern Ireland in action, and denial in messaging, is a toxic mix, well recognised in Belfast. And very hard to handle.
When do we ever hear the UK government take account of Northern Ireland in e.g. their willingness to take no-deal, or leave all European regulatory agencies? And when it does, e.g. on an EU office in Northern Ireland, it appears to be carelessly as part of UK/EU power games.
I hope that the UK government reads this report carefully and engages properly with Northern Ireland parties, business, civil society etc, and with the EU in regard of Northern Ireland. Can't say I'm confident based on previous actions though.

This is literally the problem we've been struggling with since 2016. Still no solutions as to how Northern Ireland business can have utterly free access to GB but products from Ireland or the EU will not. Paras 19 and 23. Bring back the drones?
Similarly the other way round. If all goods could theoretically go to the EU, and in the absence of a trade deal, how can you stop them? "There are various ways" is rather less detail that you'd want 6 months before the event.

£110bn is less than 10% of total UK trade. It is only reached by including Norway and Switzerland where the continuity agreements do not replicate existing trade. The only 1 of our top 25 trade partners to agree an unchanged FTA asked for a renegotiation after 2 years.
Good job in getting what we've got. But it falls some way short of the promises politicians have made, or indeed of specifically what is claimed. businessinsider.com/liam-fox-promi…
I think on the basis of a subsequent exchange that the £110bn figure is incorrect as it includes Norway where the deal was to cover a no-deal Brexit but a deal from Jan 1 2021 has not been agreed. (Techy point - unless the gov stats include trade with UK territories)

Have been pondering for a while how to distinguish specialists (a preferable term in this context to experts) on twitter, between those broadly neutral and those clearly partisan. Two ways I think - neutral specialists will admit errors, and not always take the same side...
Yesterday UK trade specialists were trying quickly to tell which parts of the proposed UK text had not been seen before. In doing so among the cross checking I made at least one error, and there were a couple of others I spotted. Hands up to that. Partisans never admit errors.
In Brexit twitter it is common for neutral analysts to be accused of being EU shills. Of late US defenders of the WTO have been accused of being China shills. All said analysts have at times been critical of the EU or China. Their accusers are never critical of their own side.
