As a note, this is not an exhaustive list, and we’re not experts in the specifics of public records laws in every jurisdiction, so the items below may not work in every situation, but we've tried to identify principles that should help you create more effective records requests.

Stephen Miller has a hand-picked network of allies across the federal government — and one of them just got a job as a top official at the Department of Homeland Security.

William Clark Barrow is the new DHS Executive Secretary. We obtained records that show Miller’s network previously tried to place Barrow at the Social Security Administration to “help with information-sharing issues.”
This is especially notable because of the SSA’s role with a policy Miller has focused on — the public charge rule, which prevents immigrants who receive or are likely to receive government benefits from getting green cards.

We’ve been investigating how the ongoing coronavirus pandemic could impact voting this year.

This week we obtained records from the Texas Department of Health and Human Services that include a National Voter Registration Act implementation plan.

After the Wisconsin Elections Commission voted to send absentee ballot applications to about 2.7 million voters, we asked multiple WI counties for data on absentee ballots that were received, sent, counted, or rejected.
