On the chopping block: the county's voluntary agreement with ICE under INA 287(g).
This notorious program is legalized racial profiling.
If you follow me, you know I'm trying to unseal the papers of John Tanton, their white nationalist founder.t
287(g) is a beloved tool of these hate groups.
It spreads fear in aspiring American communities, helping to break up families, engendering distrust with law enforcement, and makes taxpayers foot the bill.
It's not about safety. Never has been.
It's about race.
Nearly 70 people, myself included, spoke against it. PW County was on the national stage in 2007 for its embrace of 287g, which led to a mass exodus of immigrants from the county, wrecking its economy.
And immigration law is complex. (Take it from a lawyer like me who's been doing it for 17 years.) Why would we want to burden law enforcement with it?
That only makes sense if you think immigrants are inherently criminal. How does ripping families apart enhance public safety?
Again: it's never been about safety.
You can't blame the class for not doing the bully's homework.
287(g) is a racist tool, nothing more. If a policy is championed by white nationalists, maybe it's time to reconsider it.
I'm hopeful the new board will relegate this hateful policy to the trash can of history where it belongs.
I stand with immigrants today and every day.
