We’re very pleased to share our new #HousingRightsInPractice report. This shares lessons learned from four years working with local people in Leith to use #HumanRights to tackle poor housing [1/7]

Using a model first developed by @PPR_Org in Belfast, #HousingRightsInPractice supported local people to secure improvements in their housing by advocating for their #RightToHousing and other #HumanRights. [2/7] Quote attributed to UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights: “The right to housing should be seen as the right to live somewhere in security, peace <br />
and dignity.”
The report shows how the project had a positive impact on key aspects of people’s #RightToHousing - and their other #HumanRights too. #HousingRightsInPractice [3/7] Quote attributed to Leith resident and project participant: “What I have learned is massive, and it’s not just about housing. If you have an adequate house it reduces your fuel poverty, which means you are not starving or cold, which impacts on health in a positive way.”
Through surveys and research interviews, the report draws on the first hand experiences of those involved in the project and shows the wider impact that the project had across the community #HousingRightsInPractice. [4/7] Quote attributed to local resident “It sounds silly but this community died and I have seen it come back to life. The first thing anyone needs to get their lives together is decent housing, and that’s now happening.”
The report also shares lessons for other communities who want to use #HumanRights to achieve change. For example, this includes the need to plan and prepare for resistance to change #HousingRightsInPractice [5/7] Quote attributed to Community development worker: “If you are doing your job right, of course you are getting kickback. That gave me a bit of comfort actually that we are getting this right, because we are starting to shift the power dynamic.”
The #HousingRightsInPractice project also aimed to support #DutyBearers - those with responsibilities to protect #HumanRights. One lesson is that taking a #HumanRights approach is about more than legal compliance, it’s about achieving better outcomes [6/7] Quote attributed to PPR representative: “Make the business case. It’s an opportunity to tap into the expertise of people on the ground that is very often not tapped into.”
The #HousingRightsInPractice project made a direct difference in #Leith. We hope this new report will be a helpful guide for other people and organisations who want to put #HumanRights into practice.
