Marie Kondo exists in a Japanese social context, not an American one. It’s extremely myopic and maybe even jingoistic to forcibly define her as a “woman of color.” I highly doubt that’s how she conceives of herself.
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, for example, has spoken powerfully about not having thought of herself as “black” growing up in Nigeria, where she said she never had to think about race at all.
The whole world doesn’t organize itself within the language of American identity politics. The world is not a graduate seminar.
Anyway, one good way to really respect and nurture diversity is to resist forcing people into your own constructs.
