@SenatorCollins has an interesting adjacency here, too. (1)
According to the article, Ueland met with Pompeo to discuss his potential appointment as Under Secretary of State for “human rights.”
Ueland worked for Pompeo as the Director of the U.S. Office of Foreign Assistance Resources from 10/18 through 3/19. (3)
Ueland seems an unlikely candidate to serve in an international “human rights” related policy role because of his prior work as a lobbyist for Goldman Sachs, whose objective then was the termination of the Justice for Sergei Magnitsky Act of 2011. (5)
A lot of Ukraine-Burisma-Hunter Biden related investigative work occurred during Ueland’s relatively brief tenure at the State Department. (6)
In July 2019, Solomon filed a lawsuit against State in an effort to get the department to respond to Hunter Biden-related FOIA requests he’d made in May. Solomon was represented by Adam Gustafson, of Boyden Gray & Associates. (12)
Gray’s also a longtime friend of Senator Susan Collins, has donated generously to her campaign committees, and attended a fundraiser for her re-election at the home of The Federalist Socuety’s Leonard Leo last August. (16)
Circling back to Eric Ueland, here he is—now the White House Legislative Affairs Director—last November, responding to a media request regarding the potential for then-OMB director Mulvaney to testify in impeachment hearings. (17)
In November, Ueland was also fielding calls from former Trump transition team member John Sweeney, who was working to help his client, Russia’s Vnesheconombank, avoid financial sanctions. (18)
Footnote: Ueland’s replacement at State is Pompeo’s former Chief of Staff. Small world.
