In Canada, we've only just got our head around the possibility that the fall is remote teaching. Fall *and* winter remote is a different and much scarier ballgame.
An online fall semester probably means sector-wide revenue drops of 6% or so. A full year online means 12, maybe 15%, and the drop will last three years at least. The impact on jobs in Cdn PSE will run onto the tens of thousands. higheredstrategy.com/jobs/
In Australia, universities and staff have negotiated a Jobs Protection Framework, which trades salary for job security (including for casuals, which is very interesting). We are going to have to consider measures along these lines in Canada. nteu.org.au/covid-19/jobs_…
Canadian solutions won't look quite like those in Australia because unionization/bargaining structure is quite different. In particular, I have my doubts we'll see (tenured) faculty unions agreeing to take salary cuts to save casual jobs. But basic trade-offs are unavoidable.
