/ My uncle has just uncovered some 100-yr old letters to the Canadian Jewish Chronicle from my great-grandfather (then on the exec cttee of the Queen's Alumni Association) going to town on Queen's Principal for his remarks on the desirability of keeping out Jewish students.
/ Specifically, the Principal apparently said that at McGill, which was just *full* of Jews, students came into English class barely understanding Shakespeare, and the reason Jews did so well in school anyway was that they shirked Army duty in WWI.
/ The Chancellor of Queen's responded with a letter saying the remarks were "phrased in such a way as to be misunderstood" and anyway the Principal "has taken an active part in the campaign for needy Jews in Palestine". So that's OK, then.
/ The Principal in question was the last of nine Queen's principals to also be a Presbyterian Minister. queensu.ca/encyclopedia/t…. The Chancellor was E.W. Beatty, President of the CPR, & who for a brief period 1921-23 was simultaneously chancellor of both Queen's & McGill.
/ Anyways, here is the correspondence where my great-grandfather demands that Queen's explain Principal Taylor's bias against Jews and where the chairman of the CPR tells him "oh no you must be mistaken"
