Mixed feelings today. It is good to learn that 480 unaccompanied child refugees, living in appalling conditions in the camps in Europe, have been offered sanctuary here under what became known as the Dubs scheme.

But I am heartbroken that the scheme has now been ended by the government, effectively ending Britain’s offer of protection for these children, though thousands still remain stranded in rapidly deteriorating camps.

When parliament voted for the scheme, we hoped thousands of children would benefit but instead the government capped the scheme arbirarily at 480 places.

And yet local authorities have offered 1,400 places to these vulnerable lone children. By closing this legal route to safety there’s a real risk these children will instead be pushed into the hands of smugglers or risk their lives in dangerous crossings.

I will keep calling on the government to lift the arbitrary cap and give more children sanctuary here. The children still stranded in appalling camps, with no family to protect them, deserve the same lifeline as the lucky 480.
