Call It Misogyny, Not Terrorism.

- my comment on this ex-agent’s piece, repurposed for Twitter.

——————

Misogyny should be called by its name. Not domestic assault. Not mental illness. Not senseless violence. And certainly not terrorism. 1/x

Since September 2001 Canada’s security forces have been steadily expanding the definition of terrorism,  and with it the scope of their mission. The first step was the Anti-Terrorism Act (2001). 2/x
The Anti-Terrorism Act dramatically encroached on the civil liberties of all Canadians on the dubious premise that we required protection from radical political and social ideas. This misogyny foray is another step on that indefensible path. 3/x
We may in fact be witnessing another episode in a long-running security-service saga. As one target recedes, others must be identified to keep spies and eavesdroppers from joining the ranks of the unemployed. 4/x
We have hate-crime and hate-speech provisions in the Criminal Code. If acts motivated by misogyny are to be tried as sociopathic crimes, that’s the appropriate domain. 5/x
We don’t need another excuse to avoid confronting misogyny for what it is: a cast of mind that pervades our society at all levels and harms women in innumerable ways, including lost opportunity, psychological abuse and violent death. 6/6
