No, George Wallace wasn't a Republican -- but he did offer to switch parties in 1964 if only Goldwater would make him his running mate.

As I noted in this thread, it wasn't much of a stretch for George Wallace to imagine that the Republican Party in 1964 would welcome him with open arms, given all that happened with it that year -- especially at the convention.

And though Wallace didn't become a Republican, it's important to remember that the first wave of Southern Republicans shared his commitment to segregation and opposition to civil rights.
