I'm really grateful to be able to enroll my kids in a public school. I'm also grateful that @dcpublicschools are providing virtual summer programming.
None of what follows is a criticism of @dcpublicschools but a recognition of how many pieces of community-wide support need to come together for all of us to make the "new normal" sustainable.
Right now I can't for the life of me figure out what the "new normal" (pp. 32-33 below) for school re-opening looks like in practical terms for families where parents/guardians work full-time, or for my non-traditional students who already study and work way more than full-time
I understand & support the public health imperative for staggering through an A/B schedule. But are employers going to support parents to stay home and care for their kids if their kids are on an A schedule and its a B day?
Does our public school system have the capacity to provide childcare on the days our kids are not in school? Or are we going to keep pretending that parents/guardians can somehow work/study full-time while also caregiving/homeschooling full-time?
What creative solutions can we come up with as a community to keep our kids cared for, and that will also manage the public health risks?
I have - for Covid-life reasons, not been on Twitter much lately, so maybe you're all on top of this. But if not I'd be grateful for follow recs on the no-doubt many smart ppl out there who are ahead of the curve in thinking this through. Unroll @threadreaderapp
