#CycloneAmphaan hit India’s east coast more than 60 hours back and Kolkata is still without electricity, water supply, broadband. Phone networks are patchy. The death toll till now is 80. Videos & pics follow. Thread.
This is the first video @abhirup_chdhry sent me. His experience is bone chilling to listen to. This video is from 20th May, 4.30pm in Kolkata. In front is the Kolkata Airport. Otherwise brightly lit, but hidden by the wind. This was just the start.
He told me the cyclone lasted till about 9.30pm and in those 5 hours it seemed as if nothing will survive. His house is on the fourth floor and water was coming in through doors and A/C vents.
His mother and him were trying to save themselves and standing in the front of the door. The door was banging as if 3 to 4 people were pushing it. At one point he says, he felt the building shake but says his mind could be playing games.
The whole night the family did not sleep. He says glass was shattering and windows were shaking violently. The sound of the wind was deafening. Video of morning after
Abhirup said it’s nothing like he could have imagined. Beats all Hollywood films. In the morning when he got out, everything was gone - all electric poles, all trees. This video was sent by his friend. He hasn’t been able to go down. The building is water logged.
He tells me he won’t wish this on anyone. Nature’s fury was just too powerful and he worries about people with shanty homes.
I spoke with Uttaran @eves_666 who lives in Goa and his family was in Bengal. This video is from his country house in Habi Chack Village, Purba Mednipur district in West Bengal. 2 hours before the worst part of the #CycloneAmphan hit @eves_666
The next day morning this is the devastation that #CycloneAmphan did to the his family house
Meanwhile his mother left his house in Kolkata to stay with his best friend. The roof of the house has collapsed. His father is admitted in a hospital where he is being treated for COVID-19. Video of the roof. He hasn’t been able to get in touch with her but she is safe.
Milan Porey, a musician from Kolkata shared this video which is take at the time when the cyclone was just starting on the 20th. After that it was difficult to record anything as they just waited for it to pass and save themselves. #CycloneAmphan
This is the video from 21st morning that Milan shared.
More than 50,000 trees uprooted in Kolkata and more than 2000 electricity poles damaged. Nature bringing the modern day advances like electricity and internet down with its fury. Pics shared by Akash Tiwari. #CycloneAmphanUpdate
We will only get to see some images of videos of the time that #CycloneAmphan started but after that no one could even think of shooting nature’s fury. People who lived through this will never be the same again. We can learn so much from their experiences.
