At some point, likely in the next day or so, we will record the 100,000th death from COVID-19 in the United States. We know many more--tens of thousands more--have died whose deaths have not been recorded.
What we should not forget is that 100,000th death, like all the others that came before it and all the others that will follow it will come with one person, all alone, far from their loved ones, struggling to breath, terrified.
Nor should we forget that that suffering, that loss, that shattered family, that promise of better days unfulfilled, was likely unnecessary, just as epidemiologists suggest most of the 100,000 were. No. They were the result of the worst leadership failure in U.S. history.
The president may be golfing when they die. He may be asleep his bed. But if this death is like most of the others, he won't act to stop it, offer condolences, show compassion. He will think of it only in so far as it impacts his political future.
Whatever the president does, before, during and after the 100,000th victim dies, he will disgrace us yet again. And he will likely follow the death with more actions that will create more suffering, day-after-day, until America's voters stop him as only they can, once & for all.
