Many people are bothered by uncertainty. The two options offered by human experience, faith in God or the incompleteness of reason, are less than satisfying to those who crave a guarantee. The inexhaustibility of "secret things" is both the fount of creation and anxiety.
The corruptibility of both science and religion stems from the fact that we lack a way to do either without human agency. Thus we are always vulnerable to false prophets or what Churchill called "the lights of a perverted science".
Let's not forget the Wuhan Institute of Virology does science too. There's nothing automatically good about science. It will make an electric toaster or an electric chair without distinction. "Good" comes from somewhere else.
