I get what Distinguished @aproko_doctor is saying and I understand your position. I believe the statement may connote different meaning to different people. We may not owe anyone anything & Vice versa in a “Situationship.” For those we love, within us we can do anything for them
...even though we don’t often declare this just to help them manage their expectations and not become entitled. This is often our surprise package that strengthens our love for & relationship with those very dear to us. People in this category mostly are not the needy kind.
They respect boundaries and our space. They are most often the hearts, minds and ears we rely on when we feel like being listened to. They are the ones that genuinely cares and celebrate/rejoice with us even when they are hurting in their own hearts. Not all of them are relatives
We feel we owe them a great deal for their commitment and loyalty to us and from their perspective they don’t feel entitled & view the relationship as one to hold dear. These are folks who will never make demands no matter how hard they hurt. They are the ones always there.
In Yorubaland these are the people the apothegm or aphorism refer to in the saying “Ènìyàn nï Äṣọ”- People (our loyalists) are the critical component of the fabric of our relationship. People you can actually lean on without the apprehension of being betrayed.
If you have such in your life you owe them even if they don’t obligate you. If you run an altruistic advocacy, however, you can say you owe no one and no one owes you but deeply, you know that even Jesus Christ had inner caucus within the disciples. There’re levels. Always.
What we must tame is the Ego. It is good to groom ourself with the ideology that no one owes us anything while being there for others. It helps to manage expectations and build good character. This doesn’t mean people won’t feel indebted to you. I do submit.
