So Mueller DID interview for the FBI Director job.
Note: Mueller had previously served as the FBI Director from 2001 to 2013—two years beyond the normal 10-year tenure for an FBI Director.

Any additional appointment would - once again - require special Senate approval.

Unlikely he was being seriously considered.
I often find myself coming back to a tidbit from Rosenstein's testimony.

Where he disclosed that he & Sessions agreed on need to have Comey removed as FBI Director.

In Winter of early 2017.

Before Sessions had been confirmed as AG.

RR not yet nominated as DAG.

"Comey said he does have some concerns that incoming NSA Flynn is speaking frequently with w/Russian ambassador Kislyak. Comey said that could be an issue as it relates to sharing sensitive information."
Note:

President Obama asked if Comey was saying that the NSC should not pass sensitive information related to Russia to Flynn."
"Comey replied 'potentially.' He added that he has no indication thus far that Flynn passed classified information to Kislyak, but he noted 'the level of communication is unusual'."

Barr also stated, yet once again:
