I lived in China, spoke Mandarin and made close friends.

Everyone I spoke to who wasn’t alive in 1989 told me that it wasn’t peaceful students in the square, but dangerous & destructive infiltrators. That’s why the government had to crack down.

The message had been controlled.
Do not underestimate how the current fight for racial justice can be co-opted, compromised or controlled.

Peaceful protest is our right. And one of our strongest avenues for change.

All the while, please wear a mask. Wash your hands. And get tested.

Be strong. Be safe.

For months now, you’ve trusted me to tell you truth.

And as a physician & public health professional, there is no greater truth rn than this:

Racism is a public health crisis.

COVID has amplified structural inequities that have existed in our society & culture for too long...
These inequities and systemic racism are built into the system in which white health professionals like me are raised and trained.

For their to be change, my white colleagues in academia must first recognize both how AND how much we benefit from this entrenched white supremacy.
Our health professions can only better serve Black communities when these professions reflect & incorporate their voices & realities.

As a white man in academia, I have everything to gain with the status quo.

Which is why it must change.

Continuing to support it is complicity.

You probably missed this article about #coronavirus in Indonesia - I did. Thankfully my friend there @SKningrum shared it with me.

You should read it.

It exposes how this pandemic continues to play out around the world and how much we still don't know.

A couple quotes that really struck me:

"In an alarming glimpse at what could be runaway transmission, a random sampling of 11,555 people in Surabaya, the country’s second largest city, found last week that 10 percent of those tested had antibodies for the coronavirus."
And:

"Indonesia’s testing rates are the worst among the 40 countries most affected by the virus — 967 per 1 million people, compared to 46,951 per 1 million people in the United States."

"Worryingly, more than half of Covid-19 deaths in Indonesia were of people below age 60."
