@chantler_jaki The Internet makes all this much easier. In my day, my parents and I were mailing reels of tape back and forth, with at least 10 days on the way each way. I have some of those tapes, fortunately, and they're a great record of a certain period of our lives.+
@chantler_jaki When I first went to boarding school, after my parents were posted to Addis Ababa, there was no direct international dialing. You had to book an appointment w/ AT&T, several days in advance, and then an operator came on the line and literally patched the call together. +
@chantler_jaki I remember one supremely irritating operator, who thought I was Dick Van Dyke, because my name resembled that of Van Dyke's character (Rob Petrie). Kept telling me how much of a fan he was, etc. I gave up trying to tell him the truth, and played along.
