THREAD - Deaths registered w/e 15 May (E&W)

With the news agenda focused elsewhere today, here’s my summary

Caveat - where VE Day Bank Holiday register office closures reduced death regs in w/e 8 May, the subsequent catch up will have increased them in this reporting week

1/n
14,573 deaths registered - 1,916 higher than w/e 8 May and 4,385 (43%) higher than the 5-year weekly average

In the last 8 weeks 135,575 deaths have been regstd

“Excess” deaths above 5-yr av now total c.54k (E&W)

This rises to just under 60k excess deaths across the UK

2/n
3,810 deaths (26%) mentioned COVID on the death certificate this week

There have now been c.41k deaths involving COVID across E&W

This rises to c.45k across the UK

3/n
Given the VE Day effect, it may be useful to consider the last 2 weeks as a whole

27,230 deaths registered (E&W)

7,466 (38%) above 5-yr avg

7,740 mention COVID, which is over 100% of the “excess” deaths. This is notable as has been running at about 75% in previous wks

4/n
Deaths in hospital settings 21% above the 5-yr wkly av accounting for 50% of COVID-related deaths

Deaths in private homes 67% above the 5-yr av accounting for 4% of COVID-related deaths

Deaths in care homes 125% above the 5-yr av accounting for 44% of COVID-related deaths

5/n
Excess deaths in care home settings now total c.25k

There were an additional 1,660 COVID-related deaths in care homes taking the total to 11,636 registered by 15 May

CQC & CIW notifications indicate a further c.1k in w/e 22 May

6/n
Comparing deaths up to 15 May, registered by 23 May and processed so far, against the figures announced by DHSC every day:

We continue to see COVID-related death registrations subsequently running approx. one third higher than the daily numbers reported at the time

7/7 - ENDS
