If we don't we'll leave transition on 31 December 2020. All the negative effects of Brexit will slam into us at once.
We're not ready for that yet. Not remotely ready.
So let's extend, eh?
- Stem the pandemic
- Let firms start getting back on their feet after months of disruption
- Rebuild Brexit stockpiles
- Finish hiring and training 50,000 new customs agents
- Train firms in what to expect
- Negotiate a fuller deal with the EU
- etc.
But it would give us a fighting chance to get a bit more prepared for what's coming.
The pandemic has made the need for an extension much, much more urgent. It's a *real* excuse.
