Operation Anthropoid was executed #onthisday in 1942. Jan Kubis, Jozef Gabcik and Josef Valcik, inserted into Prague, attacked infamous Reich police chief Reinhard Heydrich as he drove near his HQ. A grenade severely wounded him and he later died in hospital.
The assassins hid for three weeks before being discovered. Surrounded in the basement of the Church of St Cyril and St Methodius, they fought off a huge attack by German troops before taking their own lives.
The Nazi reprisals for the assassination of Heydrich were horrifically cruel. Most significantly, the village of Lidice was destroyed - the men shot, women sent to concentration camps, children sent to extermination camps.
