Phil Mickelson told the @latimes: "I think you could showcase guys like Steph Curry and Michael Jordan or Tony Romo and Patrick Mahomes ... or you could have someone who loves the game and is competitive but is really entertaining like Larry David and Bill Murray."
The constant would be Tiger and Phil but they wouldn't always have to opponents. Mickelson told the @latimes "What if Tiger and I were to team up and take on two younger players or what if we were to team up with younger players and have it be a real high-level golf competition?”
The original plan for Sunday’s event was to hold it on June 2, a day after what would have been Game 7 of the NBA Western Conference finals, with both events airing on TNT. Nothing is official but they'd like #TheMatch to maybe be a day after Thanksgiving tradition in the future.
Mickelson said there would be a charitable element moving forward too. "It’s about finding the right mix of those competitors and I don’t think we could get two better guys than who we had in Peyton and Tom. Going forward that will be the challenge. How do we improve on that?"
Who would you want to see in The Match 3?
The concept for #TheMatch came from Bryan Zuriff, executive producer of Ray Donovan and Escape at Dannemora, who likes the day after Thanksgiving for the event. "We envision it once a year depending on schedules and health but we like the charitable component of giving back."
As I reported in this column, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson originally agreed to do three events. After the success of "The Match," there will be a third "rubber match" at some point but Mickelson thinks there is potential for more than that and those talks have already started.
