Finally got around to a more thorough-going treatment of @BretWeinstein 's "metaphorical truth". Even if @RationalityRule can swallow the "truth" end of it, the issue is that all human appropriation of "truth" is done metaphorically. that's language/culture
The following questions then address his "progress" question and the unquestioned modernist bias that scientific models are superior to traditional ones. You must ask (ala @jordanbpeterson) "superior for what? to do what?"
The Boxing day Tsunami illustration of "metaphorical truth" is a perfect illustration of the relative weakness of the modernist system. It is equally metaphorical... "plates" like we eat off of? "tectonic"? etymonline.com/word/tectonic
The metaphorical aspect of this isn't just in the language, it's in the "relevance realization" see non-theist (for those allergic to theists) @vervaeke_john 's work which I think nicely complements his U of T partner JBP.
the traditional cultural/religious model out-performed the equally metaphorical "tectonic plates" model. Why? Modernistic scientific models are less adaptive to wide spread economical propagation and far more vulnerable to decay.
In this video with @BenjaminABoyce @BretWeinstein aptly critiques the deficiencies of contemporary education.
Scientific image/frame education is tremendously expensive (for individuals and communities), highly dependent on hierarchies of academic/priestly classes and as we're seeing in the COVID epidemic very fragile in terms of populous believability.
Traditional cultural/religious metaphors scale far better across personality, temperament and intelligence ranges naturally found in human populations. Are propagated far more economically and are less dependent upon hierarchical structures for generational endurance.
A tsunami warning system built on relatively uncorrupted modernist governments relying on international monitors and uncorrupted media communication in this case is far more fragile than a story about spirits told to grandma by the kids...
And while we're talking about spirits, that's another big part of the COVID durability story as @fullydavid and @WisdomRebel are showing is that "spirit" is not just something from grandma's stories...
Did you ever notice that professional debunkers like @RationalityRule never bring up the observations of religion like Emile Durkheim and @JonHaidt do? @Friended4Ever notices this but peeps don't listen.
The only word we have for this dynamic (and still the best word is "spirit". Well what is "spirit" for a bunch of modernists? Their fragility again is exposed by COVID. Sure the scientific frame is very helpful on the virus, but notice how that frame (again) fails people.
We're seeing this all up and down our list of world-threatening issues that @BretWeinstein and @EricRWeinstein are going on about. The Scientific frame can't play in the world of ought.
Again the religious/cultural frame out-competes the science metaphors when it comes to actual human propagation and mobilization which is perhaps why it endures broadly today despite the pressures of modernism
Any path forward that doesn't recognize this reality will keep bumping up into the limitations so abundantly exposed by the intersection of US political, social, culture war drama and the virus
yeah, this is a long twitter thread but it is significantly shorter than my video on it all...
