Absolute shameful cowardice from the BBC, succumbing to political pressure from a rattled, cornered government, and trashing @maitlis at their behest for *telling the truth*
Let's be clear what the BBC have done here. They have thrown one of their own senior journalists under a bus because of pressure from the government. That is not how functioning democracies behave.
My understanding is Downing Street complained directly to BBC bosses, and within hours, this happened. Newsnight staff are furious.
It's notable that they couldn't complain about @lewis_goodall's devastating package - which forensically exposed Dominic Cumming's farcical account - and all @maitlis' introduction did is set up what was to come.
Oh wow, the BBC have even put their capitulation to political pressure from the government on the front page of the website.

It is not neutrality to say "some people think up is up, while others think up is down". Cummings objectively broke the rules: this is gaslighting.
