While the U.S. attorney for DC, Liu had overseen, among other cases, the prosecution of Trump ally Roger Stone who was convicted of multiple charges of lying to Congress and witness tampering.
Liu’s replacement at the US Attorney’s office in DC was Timothy Shea, whose tenure in office was marked by a troubling series of moves to aid President Trump’s political allies.
Shea previously worked in the AG’s office and was a close adviser to AG Barr. He drew sharp criticism and charges of political interference in February after his office reversed its previous position and recommended a lenient sentence for Roger Stone.

DOJ career prosecutors had recommended a sentence of 7-9 years imprisonment for Stone. In a highly unusual move, Shea and DOJ political leadership overruled that recommendation, advocating for a lighter sentence.
Earlier this month, Shea moved to dismiss all charges against Trump ally and former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who previously had pleaded guilty to two counts of making false statements to the FBI.
