The Washington establishment must overcome decades of globalist and offshoring policies to confront China. It will be like turning the Titanic after suddenly spotting the iceberg ahead.
Occupying Reshore Hill and withdrawing from Lockdown Valley may be the critical moves, but they are politically expensive ones.

It all comes down to November. One side is betting the farm Trump will lose, the other the reverse. In a way there's only one candidate: Trump and ~Trump. Biden is just a placeholder for ~Trump.
Trump for his part has replaced the term ~Trump with (China, More Lockdown, Antifa). So from his perspective the choice is Trump vs (China, More Lockdown, Antifa).

To the question 'where did the destructiveness come from?': it was there all along. What was once dinner party nihilism has lost it's inhibitions. The the riots are a 'coming out party' for all the doctrines taught in many a school.
The pro-Antifa leanings of politician's relatives reflects a deep cynicism of the liberal project. They are convinced everyone is as corrupt as the people they know.
And their response to this guilty knowledge is despair. Burn everything down. Go back to year zero. Free me of my shame. It a sociological murder-suicide.
