📖 Time for a story:

The backstory to Shepherd, my new company:

A few years ago my business was struggling. We needed to lean up and lower our costs. I started cancelling unnecessary services. However some things couldn’t be eliminated, so we looked for alternatives.

As far back as 2009 I hired some great people in the Philippines. So I decided we should try that again for some roles. Through trial and error, we ended up hiring several amazing people to join our global team.

To start, we hired an amazing full-time finance person for $950/mo. They help with our bookkeeping, bill pay, and coordinating with our factories. They replaced an agency that was charging us nearly $5k per month.

We went on to hire more team members in the Philippines.

Over time friends started asking me about hiring overseas. As the core business grew, hiring overseas has been our secret weapon to scaling while keeping costs down.

This is me with our team in Manila last May. Joemer, pictured in the back has become one of my close friends.

Earlier this year we successfully helped a few of my friend’s companies find and hire staff in the Philippines. Today we’re opening up our services.

We’re calling it Shepherd.

I recognize this may be controversial, so here are my thoughts on outsourcing:

We now live in a global economy.

It makes sense for some roles to be based in the US and others overseas. My companies have a mix of US and overseas staff all working remotely together.

I believe watching your margins closely is especially important as a bootstrapped company. A healthy mix of global staff is how you can stay competitive.
