10 Weeks Into New York Area’s Lockdown, and despite stringent measures for a SK and glove wearing People are Still Getting Sick. Why?

- The New York Times nytimes.com/2020/05/28/nyr…
47k people in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut tested positive for CV19 in the last two weeks. Their combined population is under 33 million.

2,800 people were admitted to NY and New Jersey hospitals alone. Down a lot. But still A LOT.
Part of it is that people symptomatic two or three weeks ago are now getting worse.

4/5 were retired or unemployed, shielding and with an underlying health condition.

The sick who have not been admitted are harder to trace.
Health, transport and postal workers all get more exposure.

The saddest line?

“Before...a lot of nursing home patients - but almost all of them have died”.
Essential workers are bringing the virus home, maybe asymptomatic, maybe symptomatic but still working.

Many live in overcrowded accommodation as isolating is not an option.

This is one reason Asian countries provided isolation hospitals/ accommodation in these circumstances.
Latinos are particularly badly affected in New York, particularly recently representing 37% of both deaths and hospitalised cases and 42% who tested positive but not hospitalised.

But they only represent just under 30% of the population
The community is also testing far higher for antibodies than in other neighbourhoods.

In the Bronx and in Brooklyn they were testing at more than double antibody +ve than the citywide rate.

PPE and public health education needed.
Something for us to watch with seasonal farm workers.

The infection rate in rural communities in NY State is also rising : dorm accommodation. Shared bathrooms. Communal eating.
