Black Lives Matter.

That should be the end of it. We should all be unified in agreement, but we aren’t.

I don’t understand how a simple statement of another person’s life *mattering* could cause division, but…

1/
…I do know that white silence contributes to it, so I can’t be part of that white silence.

How can my words have an impact? What can a middle-aged white dude from East Tennessee say that will make a difference? I doubt they are words that anyone hasn’t already heard, but…

2/
…silence communicates something as well—apathy and indifference—so I can’t stay silent.

George Floyd. Breonna Taylor. Ahmaud Arbery.

Their lives mattered.

But, like so many before them…

3/
…their lives were ended and added to an ever-growing record of America’s shameful racist history. These are just the black lives that were unjustly and abruptly ended in the past few months. There will, tragically and undoubtedly, be more.

4/
It’s not enough to just stand up against the unlawful and unjust killings of black people. We have to examine the racism and prejudiced policies that got us here. Then we have to eradicate them.
