Having met with so many families brutalized by police violence, it's clear we cannot wait any longer to act forcefully and boldly to root out the cancer of systemic racism and police violence against people of color. This must end.
Every officer involved in George Floyd's murder must be arrested and held criminally accountable. Going forward, the DOJ must independently investigate every time a person dies in police custody. That includes officers who passively stand by and allow these killings to happen.
Donald Trump's attempt to exploit this tragedy for his own political gain is inexcusable. His penchant for authoritarianism and violence is more and more apparent. Mr. President, don't encourage police officers to do more shooting. That is exactly the problem.
