I am on the ground, where a large crowd made up of mostly young people are squaring off with MN state patrolmen, just ahead of the 8pm curfew. #GeorgeFloyd
This is at Hiawatha Ave and Lake Street. Police have started firing flash bang grenades, rubber bullets and smoke bombs. #GeorgeFloyd
I had to move from that location, once officers advanced on the line of protestors. They also deployed tear gas. A few images from before they opened fire. #GeorgeFloyd
I have moved to E. Lake Street and Park Ave. There are disparate groups chanting #GeorgeFloyd’s name. A fire has been set in the parking lot of Intermaco Body Shop. Cars torched. No police or fire department in sight.
The torched cars are threatening to ignite Lake & Park Grocery. This couple, the owners of the store, are trying to stop the flames from overtaking their building. The couple declined to give me their name. #GeorgeFloyd
At the same intersection, there is a Shell gas station convenience store on fire. Some people standing around are concerned that it could explode—no one knows if the gas lines are on or off. #GeorgeFloyd
As I’ve stopped to talk to people here, I’m hearing a mixture of sentiments. Some want protests to be peaceful, even though they are disappointed in the city’s leaders. Others aren’t surprised that the city is, again, burning for a fourth night. Many are here just to watch.
I took a bit of time off the streets to feed my coverage to my colleagues compiling our text story on tonight’s protests in Minneapolis. While I sat in my car typing, the liqour store at Chicago Ave and Lake Street was looted.
I should note that the crowds have been remarkably multiracial tonight. And yes, that means looters that I witnessed carting away beer cases and hard booze were white, Black, Brown, etc. These folks were noticeably apart from those still marching, chanting for #GeorgeFloyd.
