This was a huge emergency that has only gotten worse since COVID-19. Rural hospitals have gotten hit especially hard.
Tens of millions of US residents depend on rural hospitals for care. If (when?) COVID-19 spreads into more and more rural areas, what's the plan if rural hospitals aren't there?
We need to worry less about rural hospitals having to make money directly from operations. We need to support them even if they operate at a loss. They should get back-stopped by government funding.
They are an essential public service and often the only option for many communities.
