Some thoughts on what's been happening in the US over the last few days.

Firstly, I want to listen. I want to hear what is being said, here & in the US, on the reality of racism & how white supremacy has benefited my life.

If you're the same, start here:
docs.google.com/document/d/1BR…
There are extraordinary voices coming from the US right now, voices filled with grief, pain & righteous anger, and I could fill a thread with them alone.

As someone who spends time in both the US and Ireland: I hear you. I'm so sorry. I'm listening.

And: I'm speaking now to all of us in Ireland.

If you're horrified by what's happening in the US – well, me too.

And lads: it's not enough to point across the water. We have to look closer to home.
To that end, here are some people who are speaking to Irish experiences of racism & oppression – be it in Direct Provision, among the Traveller/Mincéirí community, or simply living your life as a person of colour in Ireland.
I value @SindyLJoyce's perspective for a thousand different reasons – for her work as a thinker, a writer and a public figure, we are lucky to have her.

She shouldn't have to write tweets like this anymore. The numbers are horrifying.

.@makeupbymagsx on the coverage of Travellers/Mincéirí stories in Irish media:

.@sugar_spice97 on growing up in Ireland and the abuse she has faced:

.@feliSpeaks on Irish people denying the existence of racism here:

I would include the voice of Sylva Tukula, if she were alive to speak right now. But she's not. She died in an abhorrent system of institutionalisation, in an all-male DP centre, to our ever-lasting shame.

Her friends were not notified of her burial.

Sometimes voices are raised together in unison. Please follow @masi_asylum and fight for the end of Direct Provision in Ireland.
