I am looking forward to the conversation about #13th tonight. Because we are going to extend the conversation of the film between #histflix & #docuhistory over two screening over several days, I am going to keep a long thread connected to the film.
I think this explanation of the use of the language of the US Constitution to oppress people by @TheTattooedProf is something we often over look when we teach USH K-12. To all of our detriment! #histflix
For Ss and Ts, dropping in a reference to Oscar Micheaux’s Within Our Gates. Whenever Birth of a Nation gets taught I Think WOG should also be taught so Ss can learn about the very active resistance by African Americans to Griffith’s racist propaganda. #histflix #docuhistory
If you hear people talking about “law and order” over the next few days, remember the section of @ava’s #13th on Richard Nixon! #histflix #docuhistory
A book recommendation forgot a book by one of the speakers in #13th... @KhalilGMuhammad’s Condemnation of Blackness is a great read and supplies a lot of the history linking The period following Reconstruction to the the turn of the 20th century #histflix
In #19th, @ava does an incredible job of linking the use of (new) forms of media as propaganda to support sustaining systemic racism and white supremacy. IMO, one of the most important takeaways from the film. #histflix
If you do not know about Fred Hampton, you must! Here is a very brief introduction. #histflix npr.org/local/309/2019…
Another book recommendation after watching #13th, Angela Davis's Women, Race, & Class #histflix
Ok, last book recommendation of the night. Bryan Stevenson’s Just Mercy. Read it (in either version). But also, if you ever get a chance to see him speak. Do it! He might be the greatest public speaker I have ever seen! So powerful! #histflix
#histflix For a context to the specific situation in Minneapolis see the documentary "Jim Crow of the North" you can see it here with some readings and primary sources @DukeFSP fsp.duke.edu/events/docuhis…
Argh, #13th
#histflix crew, another documentary you might want to check out is #ReconstructionPBS. It is a four part series and it provides a longer narrative for the period following the passage of the 13th Amendment covered in the first 5-10 mins of #13th.
