#Uttarakhand is known for its traditional water-management practices. Many traditional systems like Naula (little depression aquifer) and Dhara (springs) are still used as important source of drinking water in many hilly areas especially in the Kumaon region.
#heritage
Naula and Dhara have been considered as sacred in Uttarakhand’s tradition and culture. Sculptures of Lord Vishnu or any local deity are usually carved onto the walls of the Naula or Dhara to declare it a sacred site and prevent it from being polluted.
There is an urgent need to protect these traditional water resource management systems which are now dying due to loss of traditional knowledge, modernisation and unplanned development.
