In 1968, I thought America had hit bottom. MLK and RFK had been assassinated and our cities were burning. Johnson was waging an immoral war in Vietnam, sending tens of thousands of troops there to kill and be killed. Then, Nixon was elected.

I was defeated and exhausted.
Now, decades later, I wish I could say America was far better. We certainly have tried to be. But racism is as virulent. Our foreign policy is as dangerous. We are totally unprepared for a deadly pandemic. Unemployment has skyrocketed. And there’s a racist in the White House.
But I'm not ready to give up on America. Millions have spent our lives trying to make it better. The stakes are too high. If we give up now, the forces of racism, fear, and hate will win it all. We owe it to future generations to keep fighting for social justice, forever.
