For six years I've been lugging around a wheelbarrow with water, fruit snacks, and voter registration forms to events protesting the brokenness of our justice system. Six years and we're still waiting for leadership.

I accepted my position as an Assistant Attorney General of Missouri when I was in Ferguson. I worked at the office that unsuccessfully defended law enforcement arresting Missourians for stopping for more than 3 seconds; that's the rule that brought out the wheelbarrow.

Our Attorneys General should have focused on fixing our justice system. Instead, that office and our state lacks real statewide leadership in this crisis.

Our Attorney General allows innocent people to remain in prison, pushes to defund our public defenders, refuses to bring accountability to police departments even when officers ask him to...

... and releases an annual report that year after year shows how black Missourians are discriminated against in our justice system and fails to do anything about it.

We need courage in our leadership, not folks who hide when it gets hard, not people who refuse to see the truth, not ones who aren't willing to hold those doing the wrong thing accountable because they're worried what that might mean politically.

Our times demand real leadership, and that's the leadership we are finally going to bring to the Attorney General's Office.

We are going to fix our broken justice system and implement so much of the great work individuals and groups around our state have been doing on this issue.
