Thanks to not understanding China’s play, we allowed them tremendous access & leverage. The state today is that although they run a huge surplus, we have no alternatives, thanks to our own doing which is also connected to our foreign policy

Countries in the West can think about “onshoring” because they can. It will increase their costs but they can do it because they have the $$ & tech. Same is not true for India. Our industries suffered to cheap Chinese imports. Many manufacturers simply turned importers
We can’t develop overnight in India what we are importing. And I don’t see that happening unless we open our economy. To achieve Self Reliance we need to globalise. China developed & became self reliant by opening up. They didn’t reach where they are on their own.
What’s more, our policy on China has hurt us. Mindful of China’s sensitivities (🤦♂️) we have not developed our ties with Taiwan to & use it to our advantage. Taiwan is an advanced manufacturing country & technologically a better alternative to China.
It is in India’s interests to open up. Only by connecting to global supply chain, will we develop self reliance. India has to shed its policy of being “sensitive” to Chinese concerns, be it economic or strategic. If it pisses off China, so be it.
