Ive said for years that the United States of America no longer exists. We are not united around any common idea or principle, nor any shared heritage or tradition. Unity is meaningless if it is not grounded in something deep and real. What is ours grounded in? Relative proximity?
Recent events only confirm what has been the case for a while now. We are states in America, but united? Who really believes that? It would probably be best to go our seperate ways. No country exists forever.
But I don’t know if a divorce is really possible, given that our dividing line is more ideological than geographic. So instead we will have civil unrest and chaos indefinitely, and it will not get better. Only worse.
Anyone who disagrees is invited to offer one significant thing that united us. One idea, principle, value that nearly all Americans sincerely hold and that serves as the foundation for our unity. I don’t think you can come up with one. I don’t think it exists anymore.
