This whole series of books is very good, on architecture, infrastructure etc. throughout the world and history but with a focus on Japan. I think this one has been translated into English as “Japanese homes and lifestyles”. 
Same series, 日本町並み探求 (Quest for the Japanese Townscape) focuses on ten different typical town patterns, their history, layout, typical architecture etc. No photos, only illustrations.
This is a fun one from the same series, 夏目漱石博物館, the Natsume Sōseki Museum: about the life of the famous author from a built urban environment and architectural perspective, with floor plans of his homes and even drawings of the trams he rode in Tokyo. 1867-1916.
This book in the series deals with architecture in a wider perspective but always contrasting or comparing with a similar Japanese tradition of building. 世界の建築術. Nice drawings of everything from columns to roof thatching, nomadic tents and pit houses.
