If you're just waking up, be advised right wing news and social media are going up be talking about "DC home invasions" today. It's bull. Protesters fleeing militarized police violence were invited into homes by good neighbors, which the police then besieged.
The world is upside down: "Constitutional conservatives" are demanding the police storm the private property of private citizens, ignoring the Fourth Amendment to punish people for exercising the First
I expect today or tomorrow will bring an edict explicitly criminalizing letting suspected protesters (or "antifa") into one's house.

And the Castle Doctrine crowd will cheer this breach of our homes and our rights.
There are a bunch of people planning to go give rides/bear witness when curfew theoretically lifts at 6 but the crowd of police outside these houses honestly is the most apocalyptic thing I've seen.

I have not slept all night, I saw this happening as I was starting to wind down and I haven't been able to look away.
Normal concerns about identifying Rahul, the homeowner who has been identified, are out the window ... he has been negotiating with police with mixed results, and obviously they know where he lives. I do worry about his safety but I don't think obscurity will save him.

Taking anything @JBennet says here at face value may be naive, but taking it at face value exposes the moral myopia of the NYT.

His argument proceeds from the assumption that the Times has a voice and brand to which the Cotton piece is obviously a counter-point.

He is wrong.
The opinion page of the New York Times has been trending rightward for a long time. The "leftish" representative is middling moderates, lukewarm liberals, and vacillating centrists, all of whom are hyperconscious about avoiding the appearance of "liberal media bias".
Meanwhile... how many "token" conservatives has the NYT collected, "for balance" now? They go hard to the right, not concerned about balance because the myth, the idea, the alibi for their presence is that it's what provides balance. Got to balance out the "liberal NYT".

One thing that's particularly worrying to me about Donald Trump's deployment of Bertie Botts Every Flavor Fed to Washington DC is that it means the city is being occupied by a police force that has no standard uniform.
A lot of people have pointed out that they've covered/removed most identifying info, you've got to look close to even get hints about what agency these people even belong to (and the answer seems to be "most of them").
Now, I've got doubts that a BOP riot cop is the right person to handle a public protest, in terms of training and mindset and priorities/instincts. They're the same doubts I have about them handling anything else, including prison riots.

Been thinking a lot about this lately.

I think a part of it is: protesters are easier to find, easier to catch in large numbers, and less likely to have guns and shoot back.

Protesters are easy pickings. Soft targets.

And they get credit for arresting "looters" and "rioters".
The other night, DC Police dedicated dozens of personnel to hemming in protesters all night in Swann Street. Leaving aside dubious legality and cruelty, it was a terribly wasteful use of resources.
But it was also dozens of people that they could potentially have arrested, and to Cop Fans, every single person they were after *was* one of those violent destructive criminals.
