An embattled incumbent representing a declining ethnic majority who lost the popular vote:
-calls out the military to quell protests
-attacks the legitimacy of elections
-seeks to limit access to the franchise

You'd know exactly what this was if you saw it in another country.
We will survive this in some form. Democracy won't end tomorrow. But people should not take false comfort in that fact.

Democracy is not a binary concept. Democratic erosion happens in steps as norms and institutional checks on the power of the government weaken.
For this reason, people can miss what's happening. As @mashagessen reminds us, "From the inside of a country, things generally don’t look as dire as they do from the outside because conditions are quickly normalized..."

Before this moment, every major index of democracy shows substantial declines in the U.S. The threat of erosion is real.
