#BlackSolidarityDay is an example of a day of protest and we just observed the 50th anniversary in November. Using it, we can see some examples of where #BlackOutTuesday has gone wrong.

I'll be pulling mainly from this NYPL piece: nypl.org/blog/2019/12/1…
It was strategically observed one day prior to Election Day. It was a call to "protest against the intensifying repression that threatens the very existence of black people in America"

You see the date was intentional, and the purpose was clear.
We've all heard of CoIntelPro. Always ask where/who did the protest come from?

"Carlos Russell, an activist, professor, and spokesperson for the Black Solidarity Committee, which was comprised of New York City-based educators, activists, community leaders, and politicians."
Pay attention to what's being asked of people and why.

"On Black Solidarity Day, black ppl were asked to stay home, take the day off from work & school, & not shop. The intent was to draw attention to the plight of African Americans who...
...although having made gains in the Civil Rights Movement, still faced inequality on various socioeconomic levels."

Remember this is always the day *before* election day. Not only do you draw attention but you give people time to prepare to vote and research candidates.
Here are pictures I took of a flyer for the second observation of Black Solidarity Day. Look at the purpose. Look at the clarity. That is protest. Consider finding ways to get involved in your community on #BlackOutTuesday
